Danish traditions: Great Prayer Day - Store bededag

This prayer day was introduced in 1686 as a consolidation of several prayer days. Store bededag is celebrated on the 4th Friday after Easter: May 4 in 2012 and May 26 in 2013.

Nothing much happens on this particular holiday except that it is celebrated as a day off for most. But, it is a tradition that on the evening before you eat a special kind of heated, wheat roll (varme hveder) with butter and/or jam.

Traditionally, no one was allowed to do anything but concentrate on their prayers on store bededag – and this included the bakers. The bread, therefore, had to be baked and purchased the night before. But, who could resist warm bread? – So it was eaten immediately.
