Introduction
Dear fellow-worktrotters!
Apologies if this post is in the wrong section but as a newbie I am sure that a responsible adult will be along to move the post!
As I haven't come across a post in which to introduce myself I thought I'd start one:
I'm living in Frederiksberg with my Norwegian girlfriend and am originally from South Africa but have worked and lived in a few countries during my career.
I've spent the last nine months fighting with Danish bureaucracy to obtain a work and residency permit which has finally been granted. In the mean-time I have been learning Danish and Norwegian and enjoying the weather...
Now the Big Search starts for a job and I am keen to get a job (not fussy, anything will be considered) and stop being a "kept man".
I hope to hear from other worktrotters about their experience and will be asking some dumb questions so please bear with me!
Kind regards
Ricco |

Experienced sales person on comission basis
As you have found the Worktrotter Website, you are either an international person or you are interested in international people. Which means that we have something in common.
I am leading Worktrotter and have moved to Denmark in 2006 and went through all the ups and downs a foreigner experiences, the confusion of the what, how, where in Denmark. In my talks with other internationals I found that each of us was reinventing the wheel when finding the answers.
This has motivated me to write the Worktrotter's Guide to Denmark, to help others to not having to go through the whole process from scratch.
The book runs well and is taken on very well by the international community and also by companies with international employees, but I need an experienced sales person to help me with the sales tasks as we are extending the Worktrotter functionality and we need to focus on that part more.
This is not a full time position.
It would fit for somebody who likes to work flexible schedule with flexible effort. It is the outcome that counts.
Please send me the relevant information to contact @ worktrotter.dk
Looking forward,
Dagmar Fink |

Vive le difference (in schools)
I have been in Denmark for many years and have brought up 2 children here, together with my Danish wife. We suffered bad bullying with our son when he was younger, but he didn't buck under - we moved him to a private school. He is now 22, a well-balanced young man. His character has been somewhat strengthened.
However, I am appalled by the similar stories I hear of children of expats being bullied because they are 'different' or 'behave as individuals'. Because they don't 'fit is the box'. In my opinion, the way to tackle this is to confront the school - they are essentially shy of conflicts here. But it can be very daunting if you do not have any support or live in an area outside the traditional 'expat rich' areas or there is no international school or private schools around.
I think this is a general problem, and I would like to propose a sub-group that could support parents and children who are faced with this discrimination. Any parents who have been through this nightmare? |

The Guide - not just for newcomers
Having lived in Denmark since 2007, I thought I knew the ins and outs of living here. Yet, I find the Guide to be a very useful reference. Especially for looking up contact info, making sure I have the details right, etc. I'm moving back to the States soon, and I find myself referring to my Guide to help me sort out the exit procedure. I'll treasure this souvenir as a reminder of how I adjusted and learned to love life in Denmark. -Char McKay (Portland, Oregon) |

Charming townhouse on two floors
A nice house in Roskilde, which I'd like to rent out. The rent can be short or long duration and the house can be rented furnished or unfurnished. Maybe you / or someone in your workplace or in your business are lacking a place to live. It is a charming townhouse on two floors in Roskilde old town on St. George's Mountain near the port. The house is located up the hill in a pedestrian street in a very idyllic and quiet neighborhood with about 2 km to Roskilde city center and station. Land size is approx. 159 sq.m. and living area is approx. 74 sqm. The house consists of ground floor entrance hall, bathroom with shower, kitchen, living room, dining room and bedroom, as well as at 1st floor with sloping walls, a lounge and a small chamber. The house is surrounded by a nice little backyard with a terrace, from where there are wonderful views over the port and the Roskilde fjord.

Imporant Information About Dual Citizenship for Americans Living in Denmark
Subject:Imporant Information About Dual Citizenship for Americans Living in Denmark
The following email is about what the American embassy can to do to help with those Americans living in Denmark who want to acquire Danish citizenship but do not want to give up their American citizenship.
Virginia Holst and I were able to participate in a meeting with Robert Jachim, the consular section chief, of the US Embassy. This meeting could not have taken place were it not for the efforts of Virginia Holst and Larry Feinberg, so be sure to thank them for all their hard work in this area.
During this meeting, we spoke with Mr. Jachim about dual citizenship. We conveyed to him that many Americans feel they must attain Danish citizenship to secure their future in Denmark, but that are extremely reluctant to give up their US citizenship. Mr. Jachim pointed us to this document: http://travel.state.gov/law/citizenship/citizenship_778.html
He highlighted this section: the consular officer will simply ask the applicant if there was intent to relinquish U.S. citizenship when performing the act. If the answer is no, the consular officer will certify that it was not the person's intent to relinquish U.S. citizenship and, consequently, find that the person has retained U.S. citizenship.
According to Mr. Jachim, one can interpret that to mean that a consular officer will note if someone is in serious doubt about giving up their US citizenship, which will then result in a refusal to accept the renunciation of that person’s US citizenship. Mr. Jachim has indicated to us that he will interpret the law in this way.
As many of you know, according to Danish dual citizenship law, if a country refuses to allow a citizen to renounce their citizenship that person is still eligible to become a Danish citizen, in spite of still retaining their other citizenship.
Mr. Jachim is not sure what the reaction will be from the Danish officials if the US embassy begins regularly refusing citizenship renunciation. He cannot guarantee any specific action from the Danish officials. However, as stated previously, Danish law clearly states that if a person is refused citizenship renunciation, they may become a Danish citizen, as long as they fulfill all the other requirements to become a Danish citizen. You can find the details of this law here http://www.nyidanmark.dk/da-dk/Medborgerskab/medborgerskab.htm
In a case that Larry had mentioned before, an American woman who was refused renunciation from the embassy was granted Danish citizenship. It is our hope that the Danish authorities will do the same thing in future cases in which the embassy denies renunciation.
If any of you have reached the point of the application process to become a Danish citizen in which they ask you to renounce your US citizenship but you are having serious doubts, please write to CopenhagenACS@state.gov Explain your situation and stress that you feel strongly about retaining your US citizenship but that you feel you must acquire Danish citizenship. You could also write a hand-written letter to Mr. Robert Jachim of the US embassy.
Mr. Jachim asked that we share this information with the American community. He would also like you to know that he is working on a fact sheet on dual citizenship that he would like to make available to all US citizens living in Denmark. Right now he is in the information gathering stage. That is why Larry requested the list of the countries that do not allow their citizens to renounce their citizenship. If anyone has access to that list or may know how to get it, please contact us. Unfortunately, the Indenrigs Ministry will not release it to us because they say it is an internal document.
We hope you found this information useful. We will be sure to let you know when Mr. Jachim has the fact sheet ready.
Best regards,
Larry and Suchi

Dear all,
I am a PhD student staying and working for 6 months in Herlev. Currently I'm in a guest apartment, but I need an apartment or a room from the first days of January to the middle of June.
Can anyone help me to find some options?
Thank you very much in advance.

this is the kind of meetings which are interesting in any case, whether you were interested before or not. Quick overviews with pearls of information that you can use in future: a "new" way to see coaching, and danish teaching in town.

Nice talk by Stacy on the factors that influence one's success as an expatriate. And a comprehensive and thought-provoking discussion on the Danish language by 2 very good representatives from Clavis. I'm glad I attended the meeting. |
